Making Mud

Finding time to ART

Making art for the first time in a while always feels silly to me because I'm afraid my vision won't translate into the way that my hands work. Whenever I start something new, either on a whim or a highly calculated project, it comes with the anxiety that it won't be "Instagrammable" or "wearable" or maybe I'm making something only my mother will love. It all comes back to the constant comparisons that my brain creates, I still haven't grown out of this phase, and I may never.

So in spite of this mean girl self-critic that bullies me around, I continue to create. After work yesterday, I visited one of my friends from my high school art class. I haven’t seen her since I graduated high school three years ago. I watched as she exited her apartment and looked around the crowded parking lot for me. I almost didn’t recognize her at first due to the baggy pajamas and her hot pink hair frizzing out towards the sun. The second she sees me, she sprints towards my parked car and taps the window frantically. We talked for a bit and I dropped her off afterward. It was good, it was nice.

When I got home, I tried to write for a bit. Then I watched TV, ate some pita as I tried to decompress from work. That’s another thing that derails my creative process. WORKING. I hate working, I hate having to clean and stand in a restaurant when I could be CREATING. It just feels like a huge waste of time.

Finally, right before bed I got a burst of energy and dug through my closet to find this cute pair of winter socks that I hardly ever wear anymore. I had this idea from seeing collage printed tights from @Orchard.nyc on Instagram. I dug up my block printing ink, as well as a couple little stamps and tiny brushes. I just started stamping the socks wildly, there’s no consequences to creating, only cleaning up afterwards.

These are my socks. I cut the toes off so I can pull them up high above my ankle boots, layering with tights will be so fun.

Now I’ll call them; stamp socks, Hello/goodbye, or socks for dancing.

They're messy and the ink is gloopy, but I love them. Because I made them. :)

Let's dance!!!!
